The UNILAG Eleven And The Constituted Authority

The rustication of the UNILAG eleven is no more a news but the tussle between the eleven and the school management continues to refresh the headlines as each day passes. The students showed their grievance yesterday in a protest tagged as OccupyUnilag. Some of the aggrieved students were seen putting on shirts with their names written on it as constituted authority, mimicking the perceived oppressive management. The protest which saw the almalgation of Nigerian Students from different institutions of the country received a quite good encomium from Nigerian students from other institutions while majority of the concerned students, Akokites as they are fondly called, only kept to the corner of their hostels showing indifference to the staged protest against the school management. Some angles relates that the protest is not for the eleven students collectively but only in support of Femi Adeyeye, one of the eleven students who was rusticated on the basis of writing an article which debased the management of the school. The article titled "UNILAG management:A Conglomerate Of Academic Ignorami" was seen to contain uncouth words thrown at Prof Bello Rahmon, the VC of the school and other persons in his management team. Femi on getting to the school gate received a call from the head of his department that he has a letter written to him by the school management. He asked the Head Of Department to keep hold of the letter until after the protest.

The protest continued to be peaceful however until a police officer hit a female student with his gun butt and alarm was raised. The victim's flatmate speaking in an online chat with Ezenwa claims that the victim was going to school to write a test and not part of the protest. However, calmness was later brought back to the scene.

However, as the protest was coming to an end the day getting darker, Femi Adeyeye called some of his fellow comrades to go to the HOD's office in the bus that conveyed them to the school earlier in the day. They were stopped at the gate by the school security marshals from going in in the bus. He went in with few of his friends leaving others in the bus. The comrades left in the bus were later brutalised by the police and taken away to the station while some other students protesting were tear gassed.
As promised, Femi read the content of the letter to his fellow comrades in which he was asked to come and face the school panel for disrupting the last convocation and organising threat against the school. He however showed no remorse whatsoever as they continue to chant "reinstate the eleven now" with energetic voice.
